1) Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie – Jennifer Saunders achieved international stardom in 1992 when the British TV show she wrote, Absolutely Fabulous (known as AbFab by it’s fans) debuted. It’s the story of two narcissistic hedonists, Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone, lost in the trendy world of fashion and celebrity publicity. Saunders caught lightning in a bottle by trenchantly profiling the go-go zeitgeist of the time; Eddie and Patsy were the embodiment of the 90’s. But she kept bringing the characters back for four additional series, each—to be painfully honest—never quite as funny as the first three. Now the whole gang, Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, June Whitfield, Celia Imrie, Jane Horrocks, Kathy Burke, Christopher Ryan, and Mo Gaffney return. There’s something like a plot—Eddie and Patsy think they’ve killed supermodel Kate Moss—but, as is usual with AbFab, the real story is the celebrity cameos which include (big breath) Rebel Wilson, John Hamm, Joan Collins, Chris Colfer, Lily Cole, Mark Gatiss, Sadie Frost, Barry Humphries, Dawn French, Emma Bunton, Jerry Hall, Lulu, Perez Hilton, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Stella McCartney, Ruby Wax and a phalanx of British stars you’ve probably never heard of. Let’s hope our favorite drinking and drugging wastrels have successfully transitioned to the new millennium. Check Fandango for screens and times. (TH)
2) The Balcony Big Band with a special guest will be hitting only high notes in a Monday night performance at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille. The 18 member group makes a big, beautiful sound. Get in some Monday relaxation with good music. 7 p.m. No cover. 285 Northgate Dr., Warrendale.
3) Sandcastle’s at its mid-summer peak and featuring the “maximum thrill” Dragon’s Den tube ride, where you slide around the rim a while before entering the belly of the beast for a dark mist-filled trip. There’s also the Lightning Express speed slide, where you zoom down a 60-foot open water slide. What a concept! A water amusement thrill that combines fear of heights with fear of water. A real two-fer. Luckily, Sandcastle has good people who look out for us “regular Joes” and make it a fun and safe experience. If that’s too scary, there’s always the leisurely Lazy River raft ride and Wet Willie’s Water Works and for the kids, the cleverly named wave-pool, Mon-Tsunami. Sandcastle is open today from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. 1000 Sandcastle Dr., Homestead.
