1) Who says Anton Chekhov is complicated? Here’s a quick synopsis of Three Sisters: Everyone in the play is either unhappily married or unhappily unmarried. The former have affairs. The latter have existential crises. Somebody dies in a duel. The three sisters want to leave their provincial backwater and move to Moscow, but they don’t. Meanwhile their brother’s bad marriage turns incredibly bad—and that’s it! Of course, to see how Chekhov turns this non-story into stirring tragicomedy, one must actually watch the play. The student actors at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama provide the opportunity. 8 p.m. Runs through Saturday. Philip Chosky Theater in the on-campus Purnell Center for the Arts, 5000 Forbes Ave., Oakland.
2) Tonight is the last game of a ten-game home stand for the Pirates who are again facing the Chicago Cubs. Next up is road series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals. It’s a businessman’s special today with first pitch at 12:35 p.m. PNC Park. 115 Federal St., North Shore.
3) While We’re Young – The latest film from writer/director Noah Baumbach, the man who brought you The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Here Ben Stiller plays a New York filmmaker (where does Baumbach get his ideas?) who, along with Naomi Watts playing his wife, find themselves creeping toward middle age without really realizing it. According to the press materials their careers and marriage are “overturned when a disarming young couple (played by Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried) enter their lives.” I’m not really sure what that all entails, but I’m guessing it means the kids try to explain how the hell Snapchat works.
