The region’s only film festival that demonstrates the creativity and lives of those living with disabilities, ReelAbilities Pittsburgh is now in it’s 12th year. The Festival will run September 5 – 11 in person and online. This year’s program will include four feature films and 18 short films. It will take place in person on September 5 at the Carnegie Science Center and on September 6-7 at Point Park University’s Pittsburgh Playhouse. Select films will be available to watch virtually from September 5-11.
Film Pittsburgh’s Executive Director, Kathryn Spitz Cohan, said, “These films spark important conversations and give us all a deeper understanding of the experiences of those living with disabilities.”
The Pittsburgh premiere of Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story on Thursday, September 5 will open with a welcome by former Steeler Ryan Shazier. Both the Friday and Saturday in-person screenings will be followed by live Q&As via Zoom with the filmmakers, and all three nights will feature after-parties that are included in the ticket price. The festival will also include an artist market at the Pittsburgh Playhouse featuring works by artists living with disabilities.
All in-person films are presented with open captions or subtitles, audio description, and ASL interpretation. Assisted listening devices are also available. The venues have accessible options including wheelchair seating, bathrooms, and entryways. All virtual films have captions or subtitles. Other accommodations are available free of charge by calling Film Pittsburgh in advance at 412-426-3456. Film Pittsburgh is also pleased to partner with ACCESS to provide our patrons with free rides to and from the theater. To sign up, please call us at least one week in advance or as soon as possible at 412-426-3456.
