Giants vs. Pirates + Free Shirt Friday; ‘Hitman: Agent 47’ Opens Today (Fri., 8/21/15)

1) Our battlin’ Bucs take on the San Francisco Giants tonight in a 7:05 p.m. game. It’s also Free Shirt Friday, with the first 20,000 fans receiving a Pirates T-shirt. Tailgate before the game at the Friday Night Block Party featuring live entertainment, food and beer options, games and more. You can even meet former Pirate Pitcher John Smiley. And did we mention beer? PNC Park, 115 Federal St., North Shore.

2) Hitman: Agent 47 – The number of successful live-action films based on video games is fairly low and I think the reason is pretty obvious; when you crave the Halo experience it’s because you want to be inside it, not sitting in a room with a bunch of strangers in chairs all facing the same wall. In 2007, 20th Century Fox made a film version of the video game “Hitman” which went on to be listed in Time magazine’s ten worst video game movies ever. But Hollywood’s nothing if not optimistic (in a cynical sort of way) so here comes a new version based on the same game. The title character is described as an assassin who has been genetically engineered and trained from birth to be the ultimate killing machine. Now all grown up, he’s out to destroy employees of the corporation trying to create their own elite assassins. Aleksander Bach directs a cast which includes Rupert Friend, Ciarán Hinds, Hannah Ware, and Pittsburgh’s own Zachary Quinto. For screens and times check Fandango.

3) As a sign of Pittsburgh’s growing cultural diversification, Nepali cuisine has been cropping up around the Steel City, with the North Side’s Subba generating some serious buzz among foodies. Quick geography primer: Nepal, home of Mt. Everest, is a country bordering India to the northeast. Unsurprisingly, then, Nepali food is reminiscent of Indian food. But, if you’re a Pittsburgher looking for something more familiar, something, say, pierogi-like, try momo—Nepalese dumplings filled with chicken and spices. Get them pan-fried or steamed. Other popular favorites include mango lassi (a yogurt-based drink) and a variety of meat and vegetarian dinner plates. Subba also serves Indian and Chinese dishes. Although the restaurant’s inside decor may be bare, it’s the food that’s bursting with color. 700 Cedar Ave., North Side. (CM)
