1) In the category of girl-meets-guy comedies there are many sweet and sentimental stories, and then there is Scottish playwright David Greig’s Midsummer, which is more like Bonnie meets Clyde. She’s a divorce lawyer. He’s a rock musician turned small-time con man. They bond in a bar and embark on a binge that includes bed and liquid breakfast, a bundle of loot, and bad guys in pursuit. Parts of this hookup from hell transpire to rock music composed by Gordon McIntyre of the Edinburgh indie band Ballboy, best known for rousing post-punk anthems such as “I Hate Scotland” and “You Can’t Spend Your Whole Life Hanging Around with Arseholes.” City Theatre presents Midsummer as part of its ongoing mission to produce new and recent plays of compelling interest. 7 p.m. Runs through May 31. 1300 Bingham St., South Side.
2) Hot Pursuit – Another in Hollywood’s newest genre, the female buddy movie. In this one Reese Witherspoon plays an uptight, by-the-book cop who winds up the police escort for the wife of a drug kingpin (played by Sofia Vergara). The two hate each other like poison but because they’re being chased by both the baddies and the goodies, they realize, through their comic misadventures, near escapes and all around hijinks, that they have more in common than they thought. Ahhhhh, that’s sweet. Check Fandango for screens and times.
3) After last summer’s Jason Aldean and Toby Keith concerts, our “Southern” (PA) town of Pittsburgh is in the midst of a slack country music period. What’s a country fan to do? Don’t be a “hayseed.” Get on over to Peter’s Pub for country music night with DJ JB. Check out their great specials: $5.50 fish bowls, $7.50 Smirnoff fish bowls, $2 Yuengling bottles (10 p.m. – midnight), and $5.50 Bud Lt. pitchers (7 p.m. to close). If you want to add some protein to the picture, try the $5 sandwiches ( 5 – 10 p.m.). Plus, unlike the summer country concerts, they’ll clean up and bag your trash. 116 Oakland Ave., Oakland.
