JFilm, the Pittsburgh Jewish Film Festival opens tonight and is an annual festival celebrating cinematic Judaica. Now in it’s 32nd year, the festival features a variety of short and full-length films, talks, and events. The goal of the festival is to showcase the many varied aspects of Jewish life and culture and demonstrate that we are all part of a common humanity. Screenings will be held at the The Oaks and CMU’s McConomy Auditorium. Tonight features a special event with a Beatles themed cocktail reception with appetizers prior to the screening of Midas Man. The film is a drama about Brian Epstein, the legendary manager of The Beatles. JFilm describes the movie as, “A stylish musical biopic that explores the life of Brian Epstein, the visionary Jewish manager whose bold guidance propelled the Beatles to their meteoric rise and global stardom. Known as the “fifth Beatle,” Epstein ushered the scrappy Liverpool band from smoky backroom clubs to sold-out stadiums, but his brilliance was at times overshadowed by his own personal demons.”
Another interesting film is a documentary about comedian/actor/talk show host Charles Grodin, who was additionally an effective social activist. He grew up in Pittsburgh and attended Peabody High School in East Liberty. The documentary is called, Charles Grodin: Rebel with a Cause. Midas Man is being shown at The Oaks Theater tonight with the preshow event. 6:30 p.m. For a complete schedule visit the festival website. JFilm continues through May 4. 310 Allegheny River Blvd., Oakmont.
