Shemekia Copeland Performs at Pgh International Jazz Fest; Youngstown State Penguins vs. Pitt Panthers at Acrisure (Sat., 9/21/24)

1) Harlem-born blues singer Shemekia Copeland gained a lot of notice with “Never Going Back to Memphis,”  which featured her resonant blues/soul vocals, storytelling lyrics, and fantastic guitar and drum playing. Copeland—the daughter of Texas blues guitarist and singer Johnny Copeland—started out singing professionally as her dad’s opening act while still in high school. A six-time Grammy nominee, she’s performed with such notables as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Mick Jagger, and Eric Clapton. Copeland has also performed for President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama at the White House. Her lates album release, Blame It On Eve, dropped on August 30. She’ll be playing a free concert on Liberty Avenue at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival. 6 p.m.

2) The Pitt Panthers Football team are now 3-0. They rallied back to overcome a deficit against West Virginia last week in the Backyard Brawl. Today they’re playing their homecoming game against the Youngstown State Penguins. Last week we saw the continuing rise of transfer quarterback Eli Holstein, and transfer running back Desmond Reid. Is 4-0 in the offing? Next up is an away game on October 5 versus North Carolina Tar Heels. 3:30 p.m. Acrisure Stadium, 100 Art Rooney Ave., North Shore.
