DosA Cupcakes and More!: A Baked Goods Company Rises in the Eastern Suburbs

DosA Cupcakes and More! co-owner Lisa Stoff was first captivated by the idea for baking and selling min-cupcakes while at a West Coast mini-cupcake competition. “I saw how much fun everyone was having, and was inspired,” Stoff said. She and her partner in business, and in life, husband, Doug Fox, started DosA at a pop-up event at Willow Creek in Castle Shannon in August of 2019. It went well and they started growing through vendor shows and supplying baked goods to friends, family, and a steadily increasing customer base. DosA is a play on the celebrity nickname contractions like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez—Bennifer. DosA stands for Doug and Lisa.

DosA was all set to have a big tasting party on March 20, 2020 at The Steel Goat at Penn Hills Nursery. They had heavily promoted the event, but were forced to cancel when the COVID-19 outbreak shut everything down. DosA was forced to pivot and started offering free delivery of baked goods to the Pittsburgh area on their Facebook page and website, which allowed them to continue to hone their craft.

Stoff says that DosA products are first rate for several reasons: they are baked in small batches, all ingredients and fillings are made from scratch and they use fresh fruit for fillings, real buttercream icing, and have innovative products. Stoff went on to say, “We bake these items like we are baking for our family.”

Best sellers at DosA include cupcakes (over 50 flavors), lemon and pecan cookie bars known as DougBars, and his moist and savory scones in flavors like bacon cheese zucchini; and salmon onion, and dill.

The fall/winter seasonal flavors will be released on September 22. And if you have special dietary needs, DosA can accommodate those also using the highest quality natural substitutes. These ingredients include monk fruit for sugar-free instead of Splenda, high-grade plant butter and eggless products for vegans, and gluten-free flour for products of that nature.

As DosA kept growing they thought about opening a retail baked goods shop. A real estate agent told them about a building for sale in Pitcairn. It was fairly close to the community in which they live. They ultimately decided against buying the building, but then borough manager, Annette Dietz heard that they were looking for a location and put the word out to people in Pitcairn.

Soon they leased a location on Pitcairn’s main street, Broadway, and were transforming the space with the help of property manager Don Owen. Heather Luimes from PitCare provided a great deal of help in getting DosA connected with Dan Casey at Meals on Wheels, where they use the commercial kitchen for larger orders of their baked goods. DosA, ServSafe certified, bakes the majority of baked goods out of their dedicated Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture second kitchen in their home. Stoff mentioned that Corey Smith from FastSigns Monroeville was also extremely helpful to them with their logo and signage.

DosA Cupcakes and More! baked goods are available at their retail shop Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be ordered online from their Facebook and web pages. They can also be found at Joe’s Butcher Shop, also on Broadway in Pitcairn. Look for a few new possible retail outlets in the future. DosA Cupcakes and More! is located at 526 Broadway Boulevard in Pitcairn. (412) 573-4141.
