Braddock Library Chili Cook-Off; ‘Dramatis Personae’ Exhibit at Double Dog Studios; Squirrel Hill Night Market (Sat., 10/7/23)

1) Tasty chili, cold beer, DJs and live music will all add up to a lively 16th annual Chili Cook-off fundraiser for the Braddock Carnegie Library Association. A nice mix of library patrons, Braddock residents and non-residents all mingle together for the fun event. Many different types of chili will be presented by about 15 restaurant and home chili cooks. Attendees were given a form to vote for their favorite chili.

‘The Chili Cook-Off is sponsored by Brew Gentleman, Epic Metals, Grandview Development Company, Heritage Community Initiatives, and others. Awards will be given out in the following categories: People’s Choices, Judge’s Choice and Most Creative Chili. Local, celebrity judges include Ed Bailey, Chris Fennimore, and Rick Sebak, and the event is hosted by Mike Canton, who is the host and producer of the Soul Show. “We are so excited for the BCLA and our local community to come together for this special event which supports the important programs and services we provide. We’re grateful the Chili Cook-Off has been a staple in Braddock and our surrounding service areas for the past 16 years,” shares Vicki Vargo, BCLA Executive Director.’ 1 – 4 p.m. at the Brew Gentlemen Beer Garden at 512 Braddock Avenue in Braddock.

2) Carnegie’s Double Dog Studios, owned by the husband and wife team of Dave and Pat Klug, presents a new exhibit Dramatis Personae, The Multiple Identities of Philip Rostek. Mixed media work from 1970 to 2023 “create a narrative through divine enlightenment, and through fables of his many transformations.” The galleries will be set up to move the viewer through Rostek’s identities and experiences, including a heart transplant. There is an artist reception this evening from 5 to 8 p.m. and a gallery talk October 26. Dramatis Personae runs through October 28. 317 Second Avenue, Carnegie.

3) The Squirrel Hill Night Market returns to Murray Avenue. Food trucks, vendors, crafters, kids activities, neighborhood restaurants, live music, and more attractions will be on hand at this pop-up street festival on Murray Ave. 6-10 p.m. Free. Murray Avenue beginning at Forbes.
