Front Porch Opens ‘Sunday in the Park with George’; Robert Jon & The Wreck at South Park; Arcade Comedy Theatre Opens Sketch Lab, Vol. 2, ‘Apocalypse Now’ Screening at Harris (Fri., 8/12/25)

1) Front Porch Theatricals, one of Pittsburgh’s top producers of musical theater is opening Sunday in the Park with George this evening at the New Hazlett Theater. The production which runs through August 24, has music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. The talent cast includes Aaron Galligan-Stierle as George and Saige Smith, who was in barebones productions’ Skeleton Crew, as Dot/Marie. Sunday in the Park with George was inspired by the French pointillist painter Georges Seurat’s painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (painted, 1884–1886). It opened on Broadway in 1984 and won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and two Tony Awards. Sold out for tonight, but at press time there are seats available for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. 6 Allegheny Square, North Side.
2) As we’ve said before, crowds don’t lie. When people start bringing their lawn chairs in broad daylight to stake out spots for evening outdoor concerts, it’s because the music is free and the music is good. Such is the case with the Allegheny County Summer Concert Series, staged summer-long at two locations: Friday evenings, 7:30 p.m. at South Park Amphitheater, and Sunday evenings, 7:30 p.m. at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater. The lineup for the second half of this summer includes big-name acts in several genres. South Park has Robert Jon & The Wreck (August 15). Highlights at Hartwood include, Smash Mouth (August 17) and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre (August 24) 3700 Farmshow Dr., South Park Twp., and 4070 Middle Rd., Allison Park. (R.H.)

3) After extensive testing in the Arcade Comedy Theater laugh factory, Sketch Lab Report, Vol. 2 is ready for market. Their description states, “Local comedy writers have experimented with an all-new set of madcap hypotheses. From dating fails to cryptids to drag queens, this sketch show blends comedic styles and subjects to deliver 13 laugh-out-loud scenes in one rigorously silly Report. Sketch Lab presents Vol 2, featuring performances from Hannah Doty, John Feightner, Beth Geatches, Jeffrey Johnson, Devin Marshall, DeVaughn Robinson, and Montaja Simmons. Swing Actors for this production include Plumm Dunkley, Mercy Odhner, and Alex Tita.” The writing team includes, Lissa Brennan, Mindy Cooper, Arianne Joson, Andrew Lotz, Bren Macdonald, Devin Marshall, Connor McCanlus, Mercy Odhner, Matt Solter, and Xazrianna Walker. Sketch Lab, Vol. 2 is directed by Renee Rabenold. Sketchlab runs tonight through August 23. 8 p.m. Arcade Comedy Theater, 943 Liberty Ave., Cultural District.
4) Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Harris Theater is screening Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now: The Original Roadshow Version for tonight only. This is a rare screening of the restored original version overseen by Coppola himself and now in 4k. The 1979 film is a surrealistic masterpiece involving sight, sound, and emotion, not to mention an all-star director and cast. The documentary about the making of the film, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse will be screened through August 16. 7 p.m. 809 Liberty Ave., Cultural District.
