Long standing just two blocks up from Irvine Street in Hazelwood, the Woods House is one of the oldest structures in Pittsburgh. This neighborhood along the Monongahela was at one time called Scotch Bottom, referring to the ancestry of its first homesteaders, including Colonel George Woods (whose son John completed the house in 1792,) as well as the fertile river banks known then as “bottoms.” In very recent years, the Woods House was fully restored to expose its original stone walls and hearty wood beams. And since 2020, it has served as one of the most unique dining establishments in the area. The Woods House Historic Pub’s fare is neither “dear” (what a Scot might mean as expensive) nor strange. No haggis here; you’ll find delicious Scotch Eggs, potato and leek soup, Guinness-braised pot roast, salmon, Bangers & Mash, and, of course, fish & chips. The full bar offers up “wee drams” of rare whiskies and other libations of choice. The Woods House is open for dinner Wednesdays through Saturdays, until 10 pm. Reservations are appreciated, especially through the holidays. 4604 Monongahela Street, Hazelwood.
