1) Puss N Boots, the group not the movie, is in town tonight at Mr. Smalls Funhouse. This alt-country band from Brooklyn features Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson, and Catherine Popper. Jones is a nine-time Grammy Award winner and daughter of sitar great Ravi Shankar. The group formed when Jones was seeking to practice her guitar skills, Dobson stepped in to help, and they started playing some small Brooklyn venues in ’08. Popper soon joined the band. They were all having such fun exploring new areas of creativity that they played bigger clubs and started working on new material. The result of this collaboration is their debut album No Fools, No Fun, released in July by Blue Note Records. The album is part original, part covers, with a great rendition of Neil Young’s “Down By The River.” These “girls just wanna have fun” singing and playing guitar, and are hoping to see you tonight at 8 p.m. 400 Lincoln Ave., Millvale.
2) Local rock royalty Joe Grushecky is back in one of his favorite Pittsburgh neighborhoods tonight, the South Side. Grushecky sang about his love for Pittsburgh and the South Side in his ’09 album East Carson Street. He’ll be playing the gig at Club Cafe with his top notch band, The Houserockers, which includes longtime bassist Art Nardini and drummer Jeffrey “Joffo” Simmons. Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers played the legendary Jersey shore club The Stone Pony in August. 9 p.m. 56-58 S. 12th St.
3) The Two Faces of January is a just-released thriller from a novel by Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Strangers on a Train). Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst are tourists in Athens who make friends with a local Greek boy … and get into all kinds of trouble. Now showing at Dormont’s Hollywood Theater, today at 4 p.m. 1449 Potomac Ave.
