Pittsburgh Online Theater Menu: Variety Now + More to Come (Thurs., 6/4/20)

While we wait for the time when live theater can return, here’s some theater-related content that Pittsburgh companies are offering online, along with items to look forward to. City Theatre’s CT Online webpage carries a host of brief pieces viewable any time. They range from songs by performers to chats hosted by Marc Masterson, City’s artistic director, with a new live chat each Friday at 1 p.m. Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has a page where PBT dancers and artistic director Terrence S. Orr break down clips from a past production of Giselle. Attack Theatre—the company that never dances defensively—streams free virtual dance classes several days per week. And though the online party in honor of August Wilson’s birthday isn’t live, it sure is lively. Recorded April 27 by Pittsburgh Playwrights, the virtual bash features a star-studded lineup of guests from our city’s African-American theater scene.

Also, some actual performances meant to be live-streamed this week have been postponed. Keep an eye out for the rescheduled online production of Bekah Brunstetter’s The Cake from Pittsburgh Public Theater. This seriocomic play is a fictional takeoff on the real-life controversy in which a baker refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. And by all means check out City of Asylum’s The Show Must Go On(line) channel, which streams an ongoing assortment of both live and videorecorded shows, ranging from theater to music.
