Cool Picks Monday August 20, 2012

1) The Steel Cactus Mexican Restaurante and Cantina is now open on Walnut Street above the Victoria’s Secret store (talk about a great location). Steel Cactus features authentic Mexican food, several full bars and a nice selection of tequilas. The restaurant took over the second floor space where Cozumel Restaurant was a while back. They’ve completely remodeled and added a third floor with Shadyside’s largest open air deck . The Steel Cactus was packed during Saturday night’s Jam on Walnut; the staff was friendly and efficient.

2) Enjoy the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth on the big screen at the  Hollywood Theater tonight at 7 p.m. This wonderful adventure tale features rocker David Bowie as the Goblin King, and a young Jennifer Connelly as Sarah, who must complete the King’s labyrinth in order to get her brother back. The film features masterfully crafted puppets.  Kinji Fukasaku’s intense Battle Royale follows at 9:15 p.m. 1449 Potomac Ave., Dormont.

3) Blues artist Shari Richards and a few special guests are bringing a musical Monday to Jergel’s Rhythm Grille. 8 p.m. No Cover. 103 Slade Lane, Warrendale.

4) Open Stage tonight at Thunderbird Cafe with Craig King in the “ville (Lawrenceville). 9:30 p.m. No Cover. 4023 Butler Street.

5) Garfield Artworks presents a hard rock show at the 31st Street Pub with St. Vitus, Wino, Conny Ochs (from Germany), John Paul Keith (Memphis/Fat Possum). 9:00 p.m. 3101 Penn Avenue, Strip District.

6) Bullride Mania is the big event at the Westmoreland County Fair, 7:30 p.m. Pleasant Unity, PA.
