Cool Picks Sunday January 13, 2013

Cool Picks brings you the best in Pittsburgh entertainment every day!

1) Michael Glabicki plays Thunderbird Cafe. Glabicki, as you may know, is the lead singer of Pittsburgh’s biggest musical export – Rusted Root. He’s been creating his own organic songs and touring in support of them. 8 p.m. 4023 Butler St., in the ‘Ville (Lawrenceville).

2)  OK, as we all know well, the Steelers are not in the NFL playoffs this year, but we can still cheer our second favorite teams (but not the New England Patriots or Baltimore Ravens). A good place to view sporting events is Carson City Saloon. You can even enjoy rock guitar virtuoso, Tony Janflone, Jr. playing sets starting at 5:45 p.m. 1401 E. Carson St., South Side.

3) There’s a fantastic silent movie event today at 2 p.m. at Dormont’s Hollywood Theater as part of their “Silent Film Series.” Today’s reels feature one of the industry’s best actors Charlie Chaplin in: One A. M.; The Rink; and The Pawnshop. An original music score written and performed live to the movie (just like in the “olden days”) by Tom Roberts is part of the program. Another entertaining part of the program will be an introduction by Chaplin scholar and performer Dan Kamin. 2 p.m. 1449 Potomac Ave.

4) Not into silent movies, then head to the Hollywood Theater a little later in the day. Brooklyn Castle PG (2012), a story about the trials and triumphs of a championship junior high chess team screens at 4:30 p.m. Sci-fi classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind PG (1977), starring Richard Dreyfuss and directed by Steven Spielberg, runs  at 7 p.m.
