Pirates Home Opener (CP’s Mon. 4/1/13)

1) Spring has sprung, and hope springs eternal—so here’s hoping the Pirates will have a winning season. The Pirates home season opens today with  a roster of players who try hard. If they don’t excel though, PNC Park is still a good place to get a tan and enjoy fireworks, after-game concerts, bobble-head collectibles and all-you-can-eat seats. By the way, today’s home opener is Magnetic Schedule Day. Pirates vs.  Chicago Cubs. 1:35 p.m. PNC Park., North Shore.

2) The Balcony Big Band’s hitting only high notes in a Monday night performance at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille. 8 p.m. No cover. 285 Northgate Dr., Warrendale.

3) Savoy Restaurant’s Savoy Jazz Monday’s continues tonight with host band, Roger Humphries Trio and featured musician, jazz trombonist, Jeff Bush5 – 9 p.m. No cover. 2623 Penn Ave., Strip District.

4)  See how good (or bad) your spelling skills are at Lava Lounge’s Monday Night Spelling Bee with Kumar, from 10 p.m. – midnight. And if, you want to eat while you compete, you can purchase meat ball and veggie-ball sandwiches for only $1.50, from 5 p.m. – midnight. 2204 E. Carson St., South Side.
