Melvins at Mr. Smalls (CP’s Mon. 5/27/13)

1) The Melvins, an Aberdeen, Washington, rock/metal band roll into Mr. Smalls Funhouse tonight.  Their music is a slower tempo grunge metal sound featuring two drummers. The Melvins name is from a Thriftway supermarket worker one of the band members worked with and disliked. 8 p.m. 400 Lincoln Ave., Millvale.

2) A classic Pittsburgh music combo Etta Cox & Al Dowe  will play some cool jazz that will drift on the summer breeze on the river at Baja Bar & Grill’s outdoor Tiki bar. 2 p.m. No cover. Fox Chapel Yacht Club, 1366 Old Freeport Rd., Fox Chapel.

3) Savoy Restaurant’s Savoy Jazz Monday’s continues tonight with host band Roger Humphries Trio and featured musical group, Elevations, a  jazz quintet. 5 – 9 p.m. No cover. 2623 Penn Ave., Strip District.

4) Entertainment Central’s food writer, Deborah McDonald, loves Biddle’s Escape, on Biddle Avenue between Regent Square and Wilkinsburg. Deborah reports they have a great selection of coffee drinks, teas and sweet treats.  She especially likes the Hungarian szegedi kave: 2 shots of espresso, 2 shots of steamed cream, maple/cinnamon sugar, and whipped cream. Another cool thing, Deborah  says, is their patio where you can sit beneath the trees and carved wood faces and enjoy the summer breeze. As you may remember from local history and a movie titled Mrs. Soffel, the Biddle brothers escaped from the Allegheny County jail with the aid of Mrs. Soffel (the warden’s wife who was in love with one of the Biddle brothers) in 1902. 401 Biddle Ave., Regent Square.
