Verve Pipe’s Brian Vander Ark at Club Cafe (CP’s Thurs. 4/4/13)

1) Brian Vander Ark, singer/songwriter/guitarist (of The Verve Pipe) is in town for a show at Club Cafe tonight. The Verve Pipe had a major hit song in 1996 with “The Freshmen.” Vander Ark still plays with the band he co-founded  and has also embarked on a solo career several years ago. Special guest is  Wojo. 8 p.m. 56-58 S. 12th St., South Side.

2) Mr. Smalls Funhouse presents Purity Ring, the Halifax/Montreal-based duo of Corin Roddick and Megan James. Purity Ring’s sound is a mix of 90’s R & B, hip-hop, “dream pop,” synth and samples which all provide a musical base for James’ versatile vocals. They are touring in support of their debut album Shrines which will be released July 24. Blue Hawaii is the special guest. 8 p.m. 400 Lincoln Ave., Millvale.

3)  The Book of Mormon, unexpurgated, opens tonight. The guys in white shirts and black ties are here, and nooo, they are not your Blues Brothers. They rock the house with a sermon about the secret power of frogs, a bunch of songs you’ll want to sing in the shower (but not around small children, please), and a happy ending that might even make you, um … think. There are still some seats available for this blockbuster Tony and Grammy award-winning play by South Park television show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with Robert Lopez, who co-wrote Avenue Q. 4) The Pirates take on the Chicago Cubs today in a”business persons special” game at 12:35 p.m. Take your best client or your employees to the ballgame plus there’s beer or soda, peanuts and Cracker Jacks, and hot dogs.
