Opera Superstar Soprano Renée Fleming in Recital at Carnegie Music Hall (CPs Tues., 2/18/14)

1) Renowned opera soprano Renée Fleming, born in Indiana, Pa., is performing in Pittsburgh after a highly successful gig singing the “Star-Spangled Banner” at the NFL Championship game earlier this month in New Jersey. Fleming is known as the “people’s diva” and has won a Grammy Award and the National Medal of the Arts. Her crystalline voice has put her in demand at all of the world’s great opera houses. In addition to her singing, she has hosted several TV and radio performances, including  “The Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD” series and “Live From Lincoln Center” on PBS. This performance, presented by Pittsburgh Opera, is a great opportunity to see one of the most renowned vocalists in beautiful Carnegie Music Hall. There is also a VIP opportunity to meet Fleming in a post-recital reception for an additional charge. 8 p.m. 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland.

2)  Thunderbird Café‘s Space Exchange series, which explores progressive jazz in relation to other musical genres, continues tonight with the Chris Parker 3. Guitarist Chris Parker is joined by bassist Matt Booth and drummer David Throckmorton. 9 p.m. No cover. 4023 Butler St., Lawrenceville.

3) At Theater Square, vocalist Kenia, a native of Brazil, is the featured performer for this Tuesday’s jazz series at Backstage Bar. No cover. 5 – 9 p.m. 655 Penn Ave., Cultural District.

4)  If you live farther out from the city center and wish to ice skate in a sylvan setting, then Allegheny County’s North and South Parks ice skating rinks are “your ticket to fun!”  The rinks offer both free and paid skating lessons as well as skate rentals. Today’s sessions are from 7:30 – 9 p.m. North Park rink is on Pearce Mill Road; South Park rink is on Buffalo Drive.
