Slask Song & Dance Ensemble of Poland at Byham (CP’s Tues. 3/19/13)

1)  Just this past weekend, we had a celebration of Irish culture, music, and dance; now we can enjoy a cultural experience from another important group in Pittsburgh’s demographic melting pot, Slask Song & Dance Ensemble of Poland. Over 100 performers are in the production, including a choir, orchestra, and dancers. Colorful cultural costumes adorn the entertainers. The troupe from Koszęcin, Poland, has been performing since 1954 and tours worldwide. 7:30 p.m. Byham Theater. 101 6th St., Cultural District.

2) Big Bad Voodoo Daddy makes it even cooler to swing big band style. The band, from Los Angeles, will be laying down their sound at Altar Bar. One of their songs is titled “You & Me &  the Bottle Makes Three”; another is “Go Daddy-O.” Special guest is Neon Swing X-Perience. 7 p.m. 1620 Penn Ave., Strip District.

3) The Thunderbird Cafe’s Space Exchange series continues with OPEK, a smaller-sized big band from the Pittsburgh region. Their sound is mainly influenced by Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. The band also plays their own originals. OPEK sounds epic. 9 p.m. No cover. 4023 Butler St., Lawrenceville.

4) Penguins take on the Washington Capitals. Here’s to Sidney Crosby lighting up the scoreboard.  7:30 p.m. Consol Energy Center. 1001 Fifth Ave., Uptown.
