Backstage Bar Hosts Uplifting Jazz Musician Alton Merrell (CP’s Tues. 5/14/13)

1) Contemporary jazz/gospel artist Alton Merrell and his group–Alton Merrell & Company–play music that he hopes will “minister love, healing, joy, deliverance and peace to people around the world.” Merrell has won several notable jazz and gospel awards, and plays in the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra. Alton Merrell & Company is in performance this evening as part of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust BNY Mellon’s JazzLive series. 5 p.m. No cover. Backstage Bar at Theatre Square. 655 Penn Ave., Cultural District.

2)  The Pirates play “the Brew Crew” (Milwaukee Brewers) again in a 7:05 p.m. game at PNC Park. Here’s to hoping that the Pirates makes Milwaukee cry in their beer. North Shore.

3) Thunderbird Cafe’s Space Exchange series continues tonight with Scarf Ace!, an exciting new jazz project co-led by Chris Parker and Matt Booth. 9 p.m. No cover. 4023 Butler St., Lawrenceville.

4) Union Pig & Chicken Chef Kevin Sousa’s new barbecue and fried chicken restaurant and bar is serving up some delicious, tender beef brisket along with ribs, chicken, mac and cheese, greens…and whoopie pies.  Specials daily at 5 p.m.  The East Liberty hot spot is open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.;  Friday – Saturday, 11 a.m. ’til 1 a.m.;  Sundays  10 a.m. – 3 p.m. (for a hearty chicken and waffles brunch) and 3 – 9 p.m., for regular service.  Their second floor counterpart–Harvard and Highland–is open for cocktails until 1 a.m. weekdays, 2 a.m. Friday and  Saturday and 11 p.m. Sunday.  Check your watch, sure, but once you’re in either domain “all food and beverages all the time” makes it easier.  220 N.
