Huntress on Prowl at Smiling Moose; Flyers vs. Pens (CPs Wed., 10/22/14)

1) There is a gathering of heavy metal bands tonight at Smiling Moose spearheaded by Huntress, a band featuring lead singer Jill Janus, who was formally trained in opera and who has a four-octave voice range. She puts that voice to good use with heavy metal singing and occasional screaming. The band is only a few years old, having formed in Highland Park, Calif., in 2009. Spell Eater and Starbound Beast are Huntress’ first two albums. Other metallurgists on the bill are Chip Dimonick, Curse the Wicked, and Talion. 6:30 p.m. Smiling Moose, 1306 E. Carson St., South Side.

2) The Pens take on our cross-state rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers, tonight with an 8 p.m. puck drop at Consol Energy Center. Let’s hope they have a sad flight back to Philly. 1001 Fifth Ave., Uptown.

3) Have you got a case of the Fall blues? Local music staple Shari Richards is singing them away at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille. Richards was once cast as the Acid Queen in the rock opera Tommy, and she has also collaborated with the likes of local favorites Norm Nardini and Billy Price. Tonight she performs solo with her trusty guitar to show us all that anything the boys can do, she can do better—and in heels. 8 p.m. 285 Northgate Dr., Warrendale.
