Mayer Hawthorne Ready for Happening Sets at Altar Bar (CP’s Wed. 9/11/13)

1) Los Angeles based musician Mayer Hawthorne could be the biggest slash to hit the ‘Burg since Steeler quarterback/receiver/running back Kordell Stewart. Hawthorne, originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a singer/songwriter/arranger/producer/audio engineer/rapper/DJ/multi-instrumentalist.  When he performs or records as a rapper his stage name is Haircut. His sound is like a smooth/funk/rock/soul combo that’s very well produced (It should be with all his slashes). Special guest is Superhumanoids. 7 p.m. Altar Bar, 1600 Penn Ave., Strip District.

2) There’s also Savages in town. UK post- punk, rock band Savages is at Mr. Smalls riding the wave of their debut album, Silence Yourself, which rose to No. 13 on the UK album charts in May. “Shut Up” is an energetic song that challenges the world to be quiet for a minute and get focused on the message of its youth in order to improve the world. Opening band is Duke Garwood. 8 p.m. 400 Lincoln Ave., Millvale.

3) South Side’s Rex Theater hosts the Rumpke Mountain Boys in concert tonight. The band is Ohio’s No.. 1 bluegrass band and is known for their sped up, highly skilled brand of bluegrass jamming which they proudly promote as “Trashgrass.” Also on the bill are Floodwood and David Gans. 8 p.m. 1602 E. Carson St.

4) Country music recording artist John Eddie pulls into Jergel’s Rhythm Grille for a good time show. He’s touring in support of his latest CD Same Old Brand New Me.  8 p.m. 103 Slade Lane, Warrendale
