Frick Park Tavern Features Classic Favorites; ‘Little Women’ Continues on Local Screens (Thurs., 1/2/20)

1) Older Pittsburghers love to wax nostalgic about restaurants that are no longer. But in Regent
Square, where the new Frick Park Tavern recently opened, no one’s really talking about the
former Ease Modern Comfort Cuisine which stood before it. Pittsburghers old—and young—are
flocking to this new iteration of space and cuisine that suits this diverse neighborhood perfectly. Their sous-vide cooked double-cut apple glazed pork chop  is worth the price of admission. It’s accompanied by a tangy red cabbage and bacon risotto, which is also delectable. So, too, are the deviled eggs appetizer, about which my mother made me a snob. Other popular selections include the fish tacos and Frick Park Tavern’s signature entree, Jimmy’s Meatloaf. Domestic and imported wine and beers, and craft cocktails are also offered. This recently opened restaurant could become a new Pittsburgh classic. 1100 S. Braddock Ave., Regent Square. (P. Orr)

2) Including two silent films, Little Women has been produced for the silver screen seven times, not to mention Broadway and West End dramatic stagings, radio dramas and a BBC serial. Greta Gerwig has now written and directed the eighth version which opens on Christmas Day. Starring Saoirse Ronan (who Gerwig directed in 2017’s Academy Award nominated Ladybird,) Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet and Meryl Streep, Little Women is the American classic novel, by Louisa May Alcott, which follows the dreams and longings of the March sisters, four young women who eek out family life in a New England town during the waning years of the Civil War. Ronan plays Jo, the tomboyish writer who serves as Alcott’s alter-ego and the narrator of the story. Gerwig’s adaptation for 2019 promises to shed a more liberating light on the character differences that have enthralled readers for more than 150 years. (P.Orr)
