“Newsies” Opens at Benedum; Thunderbird Hosts Chris Parker 3 (CPs Tues., 11/25/14)

1) Newsies, which won Tony Awards in 2012 for Best Score and Choreography, is adapted from the 1992 movie, based loosely on the 1899 Newsboys Strike in New York City. The show features top-notch song and dance and is brought to town by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s PNC Broadway Across America series. Newsies opens its Pittsburgh run tonight  at 7:30 p.m. and continues through Nov. 30. Benedum Center, 237 7th St., Cultural District.

2) Thunderbird Cafe’s Space Exchange series, which explores progressive jazz in relation to other musical genres, continues tonight with Chris Parker 3. Guitarist Chris Parker is joined by bassist Matt Booth and drummer David Throckmorton. 9 p.m. No cover. 4023 Butler St., Lawrenceville.

3) Lose some winter weight by getting your legs moving with Ceili Dancing at Mullaney’s Harp & Fiddle. This is participatory, which according to their website means, “even on your first Tuesday night, you will dance.” The evening starts at 7:15 p.m. with lessons for beginners, then live music and dancing from 8 – 10 p.m. 2329 Penn Ave., Strip District.
