Rod Stewart in Concert at PPG Paints Arena; Arts Festival On Walnut Kicks Off in Shadyside (Sat., 8/26/23)

1) Recording artists sometimes have several phases of their career and such is the case with Rod Stewart as well. He enjoyed early success as a vocalist and songwriter with the Jeff Beck Group before leaving to join the Faces and start his highly successful solo career. While with the Faces he sang the iconic “Maggie May.” Stewart is actually one of the top-selling recording artists of all time. He has had 16 top ten hits in the U.S. with four of reaching no. 1. on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and has sold over 100 million records. Major hits for Stewart were  “Tonight’s the Night,” “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?,” “Forever Young,” and “Some Guys Have All The Luck.”  In 2002 Stewart released the first of his Great American Songbook recordings which continued his successful run. He’s even released a Soulbook recording of Motown and other soul songs and several other Great American Songbook albums. Look for a sweet mix of older and more recent hits in his concert. Special guest is Cheap Trick. 7:30 p.m. PPG Paints Arena, 1001 Fifth Ave., Uptown. (R.H.)

2) “Hip”—as in “Get hip,” rather than “Get a hip replacement”—is one of the oldest American slang terms still in wide use, and Shadyside’s Walnut Street is perhaps the longest-running hip district in Pittsburgh. Incredibly, it gets even hipper during the Art Festival on Walnut Street in late August. The Festival is popular, in part, because there’s so much art. The Walnut biz district is closed to motor vehicles and packed with booths where artists and craft people display paintings, prints, ceramics, handmade jewelry, and so forth ad infinitum. In addition: Some Walnut Street merchants bring out selected goods for sidewalk sales. Exotic food vendors descend. Established restaurants, coffee shops, and night spots operate in peak mode. And, music being the food of love and other good things, musicians play on. Official hours for the art and craft booths are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. August 26 and 27, but you can bet that on Saturday the 26th, merrymaking will continue into the night. Walnut St. between S. Aiken and Ivy Streets with further activities adjacent, Shadyside. (M.V.)

3) Today there will be a screening of a block of family friendly short films at Disability Pride Pittsburgh under the tent at Schenley Plaza. The screening by Film Pittsburgh will begin at 5 p.m. 4100 Forbes Ave., Oakland.
