For an exciting, ‘round-the-world sampling of art made from the second half of the 20th century into the early 21st, try the special exhibition now up at Carnegie Museum of Art. Titled The Milton and Sheila Fine Collection, the show features nearly 100 artworks collected by the prominent Fine couple and donated to the museum after Milton’s death in 2019. Although various pieces will eventually go on display throughout the museum, what makes the show worth a visit is the fascination of seeing all the art together. The Fines were adventurous collectors with wide-ranging tastes. You’ll see a cartoon by R. Crumb mixed with bizarre sculptures, bold abstracts, haunting introspective pictures, and more. The photography alone ranges from straight-up portraiture to scenes that border on the surreal. Notable women artists such as Kiki Smith and Judith Shea are represented, along with artists working in Trinidad, Japan, and elsewhere. See our review of the show. The Milton and Sheila Fine Collection remains on view through March 17. Carnegie Museum of Art is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. most days, until 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and closed Tuesdays. 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland. (M.V.)
