Cool Picks Monday December 31, 2012 (New Year’s Eve)

1) Highmark First Night Pittsburgh is the biggest New Year’s Eve party in the ‘Burg, happening all over Downtown’s “Golden Triangle.” Headlining this years celebration is New Orleans’  Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The band draws from the city’s rich tradition of funeral procession brass bands and brings it forward for today’s audiences. The entertainment and attractions line up for this event is amazing: “Pittsburgh Dad,” bands, dancers,comedians, balloon animal makers, acoustic musicians, dance lessons, artists, buskers, caricature artist, face painting, clowns, puppets, ice carvers, fire jugglers, theatrical performances, martial arts demonstrations. 2) The Rex Theater is hosting a New Year’s Eve party with the way cool Poogie Bell Band, Old E All Stars, 28 North. burlesque from the Bridge City Bombshells, and a free champagne toast at midnight. All of this for only $7 before New Year’s Eve and $10 day of show. Doors open at 8 p.m. Show starts at 9 p.m. 1602 E. Carson St., South Side.

3) For anyone that watched the Kennedy Center Honors TV program Wednesday night and saw the tribute to honorees Led Zeppelin, with Ann & Nancy Wilson (of the rock group, Heart) you know what a great female singer (Ann) can do with a Led Zeppelin song (“Stairway to Heaven“). Tonight you can enjoy an all female band, Lez Zeppelin, paying homage to Led Zeppelin, at Altar Bar. For New Year’s Eve, Altar Bar is also offering an additional VIP package with open bar, champagne toast at midnight, hats , noisemakers and admission for $75. 8 p.m. 1620 Penn Ave., Strip District.

4) The brillobox is blasting it our for their New Year’s Eve Party as well, with a wide spectrum of great dance music from Pandameic and Pittsburgh Track Authority; and the popular, rising folk/rock band, Harlan Twins. Champagne toast at midnight. Doors open 9 p.m. 4104 Penn Avenue., Bloomfield.
